Le trésor mathématique de Polybius/ Polybius‘ Mathematical Treasure
Ellis Island, February 29, 2012: In a former customs warehouse, the United States Park Police discovers a machine of unknown origin. The device’s core consists of a series of pictures, mounted on prisms. Turning handles connected to the prisms, pictures can be brought into different orders. In lack of substantive clues, the authorities ask the “Society for Iconological Conservation” (SIC!) to shed light on the finding…
“Polybius’ Mathematical Treasure” is a combinatorial comic. The action takes place in a room with pictures hanging on the wall. There are one, two, three, four, or an infinite number of characters, as well as a glass, a trunk, and a key. There is dreaming and cheating, loving, drinking and forgetting. At each turning of a page, the same story reassembles anew. Or there are always different stories, one of which might contain all others and even itself.
